What are Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau and Xeomin?

These products are examples of products known as neurotoxins or neuromodulators. The active ingredient for Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau and Xeomin is purified Botulinum Toxin Type A, produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum.

How do Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau and Xeomin work?

Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau and Xeomin bind with motor nerve terminals to inhibit the release of a chemical called Acetylcholine. When injected directly into a muscle the neuromodulators produce a reversible decrease in the activity of that muscle and a reduction or elimination of the associated wrinkles.

What are Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau and Xeomin used for?

Botox is FDA approved for treatment of glabellar lines (the wrinkles between the eyebrows – also known as “number 11’s” and glabellar frown lines), lateral canthal lines (“crows-feet”) and forehead lines associated with underlying muscle activity. Other common uses that are considered off-label by the FDA include perioral lines (“smoker’s lines”), bunny-lines and muscular banding in the neck. These products can also be used to modify facial shape and to treat teeth grinding (bruxism), excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), migraines and other conditions.

How long do Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau and Xeomin last?

When used for wrinkle reduction the effects of Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau and Xeomin are temporary, with muscle function (and the associated wrinkling) usually returning within three to six months. To maintain their results, most patients schedule their repeat injections every three to six months. Westport Botox provider, Dr. O’Connell, refines the exact dosage and treatment points over time to optimize the aesthetic result for each patient.

Can Botox be used to treat migraine headaches?

Botox can be an effective way to decrease the intensity and/or frequency of migraine headaches. Dr. O’Connell has appeared on Channel 8 television discussing this topic.

Can Botox be used to treat excessive sweating?

Botox is used to treat hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and Dr. O’Connell has treated hyperhidrosis of the axillae (armpits), palms and soles of the feet with this product.

Who injects Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau and Xeomin?

Dr. O’Connell believes that the ultimate aesthetic result obtained with neuromodulators and injectable fillers is dependent upon the training and skill of the injector. At Total Aesthetics, Dr. O’Connell personally injects all neuromodulators and fillers.

Can Botox be used to treat bunny lines?

Bunny lines are diagonal wrinkles across the bridge of the nose that sometimes are more prominent following treatment of other areas. Dr. O’Connell commonly treats bunny lines with neurotoxins.

Can a dimpled or pebbly chin be treated with Botox?

Neurotoxins such as Botox can be used to improve the appearance of a pebbled chin also known as cobblestone or golf ball chin.

Can Botox be used to treat a gummy smile?

In some people excessive exposure of the gum can occur with elevation of the upper lip creating the so called “gummy smile”. This can be treated with a neurotoxin such as Botox and is best left to an experienced injector.

Can a droopy tip of the nose be treated with Botox?

A droopy nasal tip can be caused or exacerbated by muscle action and can be more noticeable with smiling. This can be treated with a neuromodulator such as Botox, preferably, by a highly experienced injector.

Are there risks associated with Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau and Xeomin?

Like all medical and cosmetic procedures, neuromodulators carry risks of complications and adverse effects. A thorough discussion of risks, alternatives and potential benefits is an important part of your consultation with Dr. O’Connell at Total Aesthetics.

What is liquid rhinoplasty and how does it work?

Liquid Rhinoplasty is an non-surgical nose job where injectables/fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm are injected to achieve the desired result without a scalpel.

Although, the results are not permanent, the achieved results are instant and scarless. View Liquid Rhinoplasty Before and After Gallery

Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau and Xeomin belong to the category of products, known as neurotoxins or neuromodulators that are used to prevent, reduce or eliminate wrinkles, primarily in the upper face, restoring a more youthful and rested appearance.

Because Dr. O’Connell believes that the skill and experience of the injector affects the ultimate aesthetic result, he personally injects all injectable fillers and neuromodulators. He doesn't delegate this to a nurse or other provider. As an expert injector, Dr. O’Connell is among the most highly experienced and sought after injectors. His goal is for a natural, rested look without an artificial or wooden appearance. He prefers to maintain some brow motion as well as a natural eyebrow shape and position without an overly paralyzed, “shiny” forehead.

What is Botox?

Botox is a brand of purified botulinum toxin type A that is derived from bacteria. Other botulinum products include Myobloc, Dysport, Jeuveau and Xeomin. Botulinum toxin interrupts nerve signal transmission, weakening the muscle and temporarily preventing muscular contraction. As a secondary effect, botulinum toxins can diminish or eliminate certain facial wrinkles that are caused by contraction of the underlying muscles.

For aesthetic use, botulinum toxins can improve the appearance of:

  • Glabellar frown lines – also known as “number 11s”
  • Wrinkling that runs across the forehead
  • Crow’s feet
  • Bands in the neck
  • Pebbly or “golf ball” chin
  • Eyebrow position and shape
  • A “gummy smile”
  • Excessive width of the lower face
  • Excessive length of the upper lip

At Total Aesthetics of Westport Botox is also used for:

  • Liquid Rhinoplasty (Non-Surgical Nose Job)
  • Hyperhydrosis – reduction of sweating in the arm pits, hands and feet
  • Bruxism – excessive teeth grinding or jaw clenching that can result in thickening of the masseter muscles
  • Treatment of headaches – Dr. O’Connell has taken a special course on management of migraine headaches with Botox
  • Management of asymmetry following facial paralysis
  • The Nefertiti Lift – where the contour of the jawline is refined with use of a neuromodulator

What is Dysport?

At Total Aesthetics of Connecticut, several neuromodulators including Dysport (Galderma) are utilized. At the time of your consultation, Dr. O’Connell will review the available products for neuromuscular relaxation along with their potential benefits and risks. We will help you choose which product(s) will most likely meet your individual needs and goals.

What is Xeomin?

Xeomin is a neuromodulator that is a type of Botulinum toxin type A (incobotulinumtoxinA) from Merz Aesthetics. One advantage of the product is that it does not need to be kept refrigerated.

During your consultation, Dr. O’Connell will review the advantages and potential risks and disadvantages of the various neuromodulators

What is Jeuveau?

Jeuveau, also known as Newtox (prabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs) is a new neuromodulator from Evolus that was approved by the FDA in 2019.

Like Botox, Jeuveau is a type A botulinum toxin and it has an FDA approval for treatment of moderate to severe glabellar lines.

Candidates for
Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau and Xeomin

Candidates

Dynamic rhytids are facial wrinkles that are created by an underlying facial movement such as frowning, raising the eyebrows or squinting. By relaxing the muscles that create the wrinkle, botulinum toxins can reduce or eliminate the appearance of the wrinkle.

In order to be a good candidate for botulinum toxin injections such as Botox Westport patients should be in good general health and not have a history of certain neuromuscular disorders such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome.

In order to reduce the risk and extent of bruising, patients should refrain from taking aspirin and NSAIDS type medications for 10 days prior to treatment. Patients should not be pregnant or planning to become pregnant. For more complete information please refer to each manufacturer’s full product information.

Cost

The cost of neuromodulator injections can vary. Some facilities charge by the unit and others charge by the treatment area. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the average cost of these injections in 2013 was $380.00.

Keep in mind that costs may be based upon the expertise and qualifications of the person performing the injection as well as the geographic area. When choosing a Botox provider in Westport, or any other area, remember that the surgeon’s skill and training are more important than the cost of the procedure. In order to optimize the aesthetic results for his patients, Dr. O’Connell personally performs all Botox and filler injections at Total Aesthetics of Connecticut.

Total Aesthetics of Connecticut utilizes only legitimate US product purchased directly from the manufacturer.

We do not sell Botox by the unit because we feel that this creates too many opportunities for the patient to be underserved. Rather, like most high-end plastic surgery practices, we use neuromodulators to achieve our mutual aesthetic goals and we charge by the area – then we back it up with our 100% satisfaction guarantee with no charge for touch-ups.

Consultation

Dr. O’Connell personally injects all Botox himself and, without exception, he carefully evaluates each and every patient prior to treatment. In most instances, patients can be injected at their first visit to our practice.

Some of the items that will be reviewed during your Westport Botox consultation include:

  • Your aesthetic and functional goals
  • Any medical conditions that you may have including any history of neuromuscular conditions
  • Medications that you currently take including vitamins and herbal supplements

At the time of your consultation Dr. O’Connell will:

  • Determine if you are a good candidate for Botox treatment
  • Review your facial anatomy and help you understand where Botox will likely provide you with the greatest aesthetic benefits
  • Discuss the likely outcome of Botox treatment and review any risks and potential complications
  • Answer all of your questions

Procedure

Because there are 43 muscles in your face it’s extremely important that the person who performs botulinum toxin injections understands the precise muscle interactions that must be balanced to achieve your aesthetic goals. By carefully weakening specific muscles, wrinkles can be reduced or eliminated and facial shape can be modified without creating an unnatural appearance. Dr. O’Connell personally injects all botulinum products in his practice in order to optimize the results of the procedure.

During the procedure botulinum toxin is injected through the skin with an extremely fine needle. The number of injections can vary depending upon a person’s facial features, their pattern of wrinkles and their aesthetic goals. Glabellar frown lines usually require five injections, while crow’s feet usually can be treated with three or fewer injections per side.

To minimize risk of bruising Dr. O’Connell injects with the aid of the Accuvein laser to visualize the underlying vascular anatomy and he utilizes his Pre-Icing technique. Vibratory anesthesia and PRO-NOX are available for especially anxious patients.

Recovery

Following Botox injection Westport patients experience no downtime or recovery time. We do ask that you refrain from wearing makeup for 8 hours and to not massage the treated areas. When glabellar frown lines are treated we ask our patients to refrain from bending or lying down for 4 hours. The small bumps that Botox injections sometimes produce subside in less than one hour.

Risks

Most patients have no discomfort or downtime following injection of Botox. At Total Aesthetics of Connecticut, we make every effort to minimize any bruising that can accompany the procedure. While most patients have only temporary visibility of product at the injection sites, some side effects can include:

  • Bruising
  • Headache
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Nausea
  • Weakness of one or more adjacent muscles including drooping of the eyelid
