What is PRP?

PRP stands for “Platelet-Rich Plasma” and it has been used in human medicine since the 1970s. Because PRP is an autologous substance consisting of a carefully prepared and concentrated fraction of your own blood, some consider if “safer” than dermal fillers and neurotoxins. The platelets in PRP contain many important growth factors that work synergistically to stimulate collagen growth, improve skin appearance and activate dormant hair follicles.

How many PRP sessions will I need?

While it may be possible to achieve your desired result with one treatment, usually three sessions spaced four to six weeks apart are recommended for hair stimulation.

Do I need ACell treatment as well for PRP hair stimulation?

It is not necessary to add ACell to PRP hair injections at Total Aesthetics because the Selphyl system creates a three-dimensional scaffolding to hold the platelets and growth factors in place and keep them viable.

Do you combine Microneedling with PRP Injections?

Microneedling is sometimes combined with PRP injections in order to “activate” the platelets to release their critical growth factors. Because the Selphyl system is self-activating, microneedling is usually not necessary for PRP hair stimulation, but we do offer it at Total Aesthetics.

Can I still use Propecia, Pantene hair regrowth treatment for women, Rogaine and my laser comb with PRP?

Yes. Dr. O’Connell will provide patients with a prescription for Women’s Rogaine as part of their PRP for hair loss treatment if appropriate.

What else can PRP injections do?

At Total Aesthetics, PRP injections are also used to treat facial aging. It is used as a natural filler to smooth and soften facial contours, including the tear-trough area, nasolabial folds, and marionette lines, and also to improve the appearance of the skin itself.

Are there any side effects of PRP?

Like all medical procedures, PRP injections carry risks of side effects and complications. PRP side effects are usually limited to swelling, redness, and bruising at the harvest and treatment sites. During your confidential consultation for PRP for hair loss a full discussion of the risks you may encounter, and appropriate alternative treatments to consider, is an important part of your discussion Dr. O’Connell at Total Aesthetics.

Your PRP for Hair Loss Treatment

Safe and Quick with PRFM

PRP treatments at Total Aesthetics are performed using Selphyl Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM). Preparation with Selphyl minimizes the amount of undesired red and white blood cells in the PRP as well as the risk of contamination. With Selphyl, patients receive the next generation PRP with a safe treatment that requires just 30 minutes.

Candidates

PRP is used for both men and women who desire fuller, thicker hair. PRP is especially appealing to women because no hormone-changing medications are used, and PRP works best for areas of thinning hair as opposed to bald scalp. Patients who wish to avoid surgical hair transplantation find PRP for hair loss therapy especially appealing.

The Procedure

This “lunchtime” procedure involves simply drawing a tube of blood and then treating it with a special, closed system (Selphyl) to extract, concentrate, and activate the platelets. During preparation, the platelets are suspended in a natural fibrin matrix to produce a more sustained and controlled release of growth factors that activate dormant hair follicles. This PRP is then injected into the areas of hair loss. The entire process takes about 30 minutes and requires no recovery time. You can still use Rogaine and Propecia, there’s no cutting or transplants, and you can return to work the same day. Usually three PRP treatments are recommended for sufficient hair stimulation.

Results

New hair growth usually takes at least four months. About 80 percent of PRP hair stimulation patients achieve noticeable results in which the hair is fuller and thicker with more density.

Why Should I Choose Total Aesthetics For PRP Hair Loss Treatments

1: Total Aesthetics offers our patients a nationally accredited surgical facility, and we maintain the highest levels of sterility and safety throughout the center.

2: Each Westport PRP Hair Restoration patient’s hair loss is carefully evaluated, and a customized treatment plan is created to determine the best approach.

3: Total Aesthetics was an early adapter of microneedling technology, which is sometimes combined with PRP for an enhanced result.

4: We use AccuVein technology to minimize discomfort and bruising during the blood draw.

5: Because the number and concentration of platelets is extremely critical, Total Aesthetics utilizes the next generation PRP: a proprietary, FDA-approved system known as Selphyl Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM). This system suspends the ultrapure platelets in an all-natural scaffold in order to produce a controlled and sustained release of platelet-derived growth factors.

6: Because Selphyl is a closed system, sterility is maintained and no contaminants can enter the PRP.

7: Preparation with Selphyl minimizes the amount of undesired red and white blood cells in the PRP. Certain PRP preparations that claim to have high platelet concentrations, do so at the expense of inflammatory red and white blood cells, which can produce the opposite of the desired effect. Selphyl has a golden color and has been called “liquid gold.”

What Are the Benefits of Choosing PRP for Hair Stimulation?

Growth Factors Stimulate Hair Growth

Platelet-Rich Plasma contains high concentrations of growth factors, which stimulate the cells in the hair follicles. These platelet-derived growth factors can promote healing and new cellular growth, stimulating inactive or dormant hair follicles to trigger their active growth phase.

Non Surgical Lunchtime Procedure

PRP is a non-surgical procedure. This “lunchtime” procedure involves simply drawing a tube of blood, processing it, and then painlessly injecting the PRP into the areas of hair loss. In about 30 minutes at Total Aesthetics in Westport PRP Hair Restoration patients are done, and require no recovery time.

Combine With Other Treatments

Following your Westport PRP hair loss treatment, you can continue your other hair stimulation treatments like Rogaine and Propecia. Some patients may even see greater improvements by combining PRP treatments with other hair growth treatments that they have already been using.

Recovery

There is no recovery time after PRP injections. You can return to work the same day. Because PRP is made from your own cells and processed in an entirely closed system, the risk of side effects is low. Mild swelling, redness, or bruising usually fades after a few days.

Discomfort

AccuVein technology during the blood draw minimizes discomfort and bruising. Any tenderness or minor bruising is minimal and temporary.

Cost

PRP injections Westport patients at Total Aesthetics receive, cost less than $1,000 per treatment. Dr. O’Connell will discuss the cost of your procedure with you during your consultation.
