A surgical lip augmentation is a procedure that can create permanent fullness without the need for filler injections.
One type of surgical lip augmentation utilizes what is known as the V-Y Advancement Technique. By advancing the “V” and allowing it to take the shape of a “Y,” the vermillion (red part of the lip) is rolled outward to produce more “vermillion show” and the appearance of added volume. Additional fullness can be produced by injecting your own fat.

As we age, collagen breaks down and fat is lost creating thinner, flaccid appearing lips. Patients in good general health who desire a more youthful appearance by adding the appearance of volume to their lips are good candidates for surgical lip augmentation. Patients with thin or uneven lips who desire more fullness to improve their lip appearance and self-esteem are good aesthetic candidates for lip augmentation.
Most patients are able to return to work/social activities the day following lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid-based fillers.
Lip augmentation with hyaluronic acid-based fillers can be performed either with or without blocking the nerves supplying the lips with lidocaine. Recently, with the use of vibrational anesthesia, lidocaine injections have become unnecessary for most patients. We also offer PRO-NOX for added comfort during non-surgical lip augmentation.
There are several causes for wrinkling of the lips including muscular action, volume loss, and sun damage. We have the experience and technology to address each of these issues with Botox, fillers, laser resurfacing, Halo and radio frequency based treatments depending upon your anatomy and personal preference.
Because of their safety profile and efficacy, Dr. O’Connell prefers the hyaluronic acid based group of fillers. Some fillers such as Juvederm Volbella XC and Restylane Silk are specifically intended for this purpose and are routinely used during Westport lip augmentation treatments at Total Aesthetics.
There are generally two categories of lip augmentation procedures – non-surgical and surgical. Due to the brief recovery time, absence of scarring and lower cost, non-surgical lip augmentation is more popular. For non-surgical lip augmentation Westport patients most commonly receive hyaluronic acid-based fillers because of their safety profile, although fat can be used for a longer lasting result.
There is little to no downtime with a non-surgical lip augmentation.
Most effects of injectable fillers are temporary and usually only last a few days. Some of the more common early side effects are bruising, swelling and tenderness in the areas of injection.
Lip augmentation with fillers usually last about six months. To maintain the volume of your lips, more injections will be required after the filler has been absorbed.
