Do large breasts cause any functional problems?

Large pendulous breasts (mammary hypertrophy with ptosis) can cause many functional problems such as back, neck and shoulder pain, chronic skin changes and dermatitis of the shoulder and lower breast areas, pain in the breasts themselves and postural changes. Excessively large breasts also interfere with activities of daily living and limit the participation of many women in athletic activity.

How is a breast reduction performed?

In most breast reduction procedures the nipple/areolar complex is relocated to a higher position with removal of both fatty and fibrous breast tissue to produce an aesthetically shaped smaller breast. The areola is usually made smaller during the procedure.

Where is the surgery performed and what type of anesthesia is used?

Dr. O'Connell performs most breast reduction procedures at Bridgeport Hospital in Bridgeport, CT under general anesthesia. Some patients are able to be discharged on the day of surgery. Reduction mammaplasty may be performed under local anesthesia with monitored sedation and in the Plastic Surgery of Southern Connecticut accredited surgical facility.

Are there scars after breast reduction plastic surgery?

Yes. All techniques of breast reduction leave permanent scars on or near the breasts. The quality and appearance of the scars will vary depending on many factors. It is very important to have a thorough understanding of the location of these scars prior to undergoing reduction mammaplasty.

What about scarless or liposuction only breast reduction?

In this procedure, fatty tissue is removed from the breast with liposuction and shape is largely dependent upon the patient's pre-existing breats shape and skin tone. The term "scarless" is a misnomer as small scars are an inevitable part of the procedure.

Will my insurance cover the breast reduction surgery?

While insurance plans vary, breast reduction surgery is usually considered a covered benefit when it is performed to improve the functional problems associated with mammary hypertrophy.

Are there risks associated with breast reduction?

As with any surgical procedure there are risks and potential complications. With breast reduction surgery, scarring is not a risk, but rather a certanty. A careful consideration of the risks, alternatives and potential benefits of any procedure is an important part of the pre-operative consultative process.
