Plastic Surgery for Men
We all want to look our best and put on our best game-face, but for men it’s different. Cosmetic procedures for men should preserve and enhance our masculine identities and most importantly – should not produce an artificial, “done” appearance. I tell all my patients that they should look like they’ve never been to a plastic surgeon and that’s one reason we have a private entrance!
Dr. O’Connell believes that cosmetic procedures, including plastic surgery, should be more conservative in men but still achieve our aesthetic goals; whether it’s simply reducing an angry or tired look with BOTOX® or neck contouring to tighten a loose neck or jaw line. Men want faster recovery times with a rapid return to work and we don’t like to wear make-up or talk about plastic surgery. At The Aesthetic Center we understand these issues and we will work with you to design solutions for your aesthetic needs with as little disruption as possible to your busy work and sports activities.
Most Common Procedures for Men
Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction Surgery)
An enlarged, feminine-appearing breast can be a source of embarrassment and emotional distress for many adolescents and men. Today’s plastic surgical techniques are designed to improve your confidence and enhance your self-esteem with a more masculine, physically fit appearance to the chest. Dr. Joseph O’Connell has great empathy for those suffering from gynecomastia, and he has been featured on the national television program, Inside Edition, performing male breast reduction with ultrasonic liposuction.
BOTOX® Cosmetic and Dysport® for Men
Nobody wants to look tired, worried or angry but for men it’s different – we want to look our best without looking feminine and most importantly, we don’t want to look plastic or artificial. BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport® and Xeomin® belong to the growing category of products known as neurotoxins that are best known for their abilities to prevent, reduce or eliminate wrinkles. Dr. Joseph O’Connell believes that for men our real role is to “modify the message” by subtly changing the aspects of our face that make us look angry, tired, worried or just plain old. The dosages used for men are different and the aesthetic goals and decision-making are also different – that’s why Dr. O’Connell personally injects all neurotoxins and fillers. As a platinum level plastic surgeon with decades of experience, Dr. O’Connell is among the most sought-after injectors for both men and women and most importantly, he understands the differences.
Injectable Fillers for Men
The aging process can greatly change our appearance and cosmetic filler injections can soften those wrinkles, folds and depressions that make us look older than we feel. While fillers can help maintain youthful facial contours and enhance masculine features, they should not be used to produce a feminine or “plastic” appearance. That’s why all injections are personally performed by Dr. O’Connell, a board certified plastic surgeon with over 35 years of surgical experience, who understands that men are different. At The Aesthetic Center we use FDA approved injectables together with Dr. O’Connell’s aesthetic vision to help you obtain the results you want without looking like you’ve had work done.
Liposuction for Men
Being healthy and looking fit can be two entirely different things and sometimes those troubling fatty bulges persist despite a healthy lifestyle and long hours in the gym. Whether it’s a small bulge beneath the chin or a larger area in the abdomen, flank or even chest, liposuction is the gold standard for removing localized excess pockets of fat. Through small incisions fat is artistically removed to help you achieve the sculpted, masculine shape you’ve always wanted.
Coolsculpting® for Men
Sometimes, no matter how hard we work in the gym stubborn areas of fat remain, especially in the lower abdomen and flanks. Fortunately, there’s a new way for men to reduce those love handles and contour the abdomen and it’s completely non-invasive with no downtime, surgery or need for anesthesia. Coolsculpting® is literally the “coolest” way to lose those unsightly bulges. Coolsculpting® takes less time than a visit to the gym and you’ll be back at work the same day.
Tummy Tuck for Men (Abdominoplasty)
A protruding abdomen with skin that folds over the beltline can occur as a result of weight loss or simply the aging process. Sometimes liposuction isn’t enough and many men don’t realize that abdominoplasty isn’t just for women. At The Aesthetic Center we’ll address that muscle laxity along with skin and fat excess to help you regain that flat, toned, sculpted abdomen and waistline.
Neck Lift for Men
A defined, straight jawline and a contoured, smooth neck are signs of youthful masculinity. At The Aesthetic Center we understand that the aesthetic needs of men are different than those of women. We utilize the latest techniques to contour sagging jawlines, reduce jowls and unwanted fat and tighten neck laxity to rebuild your self-confidence and esteem without that “operated” plastic surgery look. We’ll help you find a more youthful version of yourself with artistically hidden scars and with the shortest recovery time possible.
Kybella® for Men
You don’t have to be overweight and sometimes despite all your hard work in the gym that troublesome fullness below the chin, also known as a “double chin,” just won’t go away. In most cases this submental fullness is caused by fat and Kybella® is one possible non-invasive solution. Kybella® is an FDA-approved injectable that destroys fat cells under the chin to refine and enhance your profile – whether you have a moderate amount of chin fullness or, according to Allergan, even “a bit more”. The active ingredient in Kybella® is deoxycholic acid – a naturally occurring compound that destroys fat cells resulting in a visible reduction in fullness under the chin. While multiple treatments spaced at least one month apart are often needed, the fat cells are permanently destroyed so no additional treatment is expected once your aesthetic goal is reached. Alternative treatments for submental fullness include liposuction and Coolsculpting®.
Laser Hair Removal for Men
Whether it’s unwanted hair on the back, neck, chest or even ears, laser hair removal is a safe and cost-effective alternative to a lifetime of shaving and waxing – and it’s not just for women. At The Aesthetic Center we utilize cutting edge diode laser technology in a comfortable, spa-type atmosphere to gently and permanently remove unwanted hair. There’s no down time and you can have the confidence to “go bare” in just a few sessions.
Plastic Surgery For Men FAQs
What are BOTOX® Cosmetic, Dysport® and Xeomin® used for in men?
Most commonly neurotoxins are used to reduce or eliminate glabellar lines (the wrinkles between the eyebrows – also known as “number 11’s”) and the horizontal lines of the forehead. These areas are important to our male patients who do not wish to convey a worried or angry appearance.
What areas are most common for male liposuction?
For men, four areas are commonly contoured with liposuction – the neck, chest, abdomen and especially the flanks. At The Aesthetic Center we understand that men are different and we’ll help you obtain that defined jawline and masculine, triangular, sculpted look of the torso.
Can gynecomastia be treated with liposuction?
Sometimes gynecomastia can be adequately treated with fat removal through liposuction. In many cases, however, removal of glandular tissue is also required and we find that this cannot be adequately achieved with liposuction. At The Aesthetic Center we have even treated some cases of gynecomastia with Coolsculpting®.
Do men have tummy tucks?
Due to the aging process as well as weight gain/loss, men develop the same abdominal contouring issues as women – separation of the rectus muscles (diastasis recti), as well as an excess of skin and fat. These conditions are corrected during male abdominoplasty just as they are for women.
Are drains used for abdominoplasty?
While some surgeons utilize drains, Dr. O’Connell performs abdominoplasty without drains with a technique that utilizes progressive tension sutures.
Do men have facelifts?
Of course! When the midface is lifted along with the neck the scarring extends higher often into the area of the temporal hair. It’s extremely important that facelifts for men be performed artistically and conservatively without creating distortion of the ears and that flattened, swept back appearance.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
Laser hair removal is intended to be provide long lasting or permanent reduction in hair growth.
What preparation is needed prior to laser hair removal?
Men planning laser hair removal should not dye, pluck or wax any area they wish treated for about one month prior to treatment. Shaving as needed is permitted. You should also not be tan in any areas planned for treatment.
