Plastic and cosmetic surgery philosophy

Dr. O'Connell believes that the foremost goal in cosmetic surgery should be a natural result. All too often aesthetic surgical procedures are "overdone" with a resulting unnatural, "operated upon" look. This is usually caused by attempts to alter the appearance too dramatically with the surgeon performing "too much" plastic surgery, often with complex procedures that carry a higher risk of complications. Examples would be excessively "tight" facelifts, overly sized breast and cheek implants, and unnaturally augmented lips.

In aesthetic surgery the simplest procedure is usually the safest and most predictable. Just as the accomplished writer conveys his message with the fewest, most carefully chosen words and the skilled artist utilizes a minimum of the most meticulously chosen brush strokes, Dr. O'Connell and his staff will assist you in the choice of the simplest, safest, least expensive and most predictable procedure(s) that will help you achieve your aesthetic goals. We understand that it's difficult for our patients to miss more than one week from their social and professional calendars and the anticipated recovery time is also considered in the choice of procedures. Dr. O'Connell prefers to perform most aesthetic surgical procedures without general anesthesia whenever possible utilizing gentle sedation administered by a trained anesthesia professional.

Dr. O'Connell also believes that aesthetic surgical procedures should be individually tailored for each patient -- for example when performing cosmetic nasal surgery the surgeon should take into consideration the fact that no two faces are alike and avoid the "cookie cutter nose."

Newspaper and magazine articles about new plastic surgical procedures often don't provide complete information about their disadvantages and risks. While it's important to keep abreast of new developments in our constantly changing specialty it's also important to give you a balanced picture of what's safe and what works.

In plastic surgery the simplest procedure is usually the safest and most predictable. Keeping this philosophy in mind Dr. O'Connell and his staff will help you choose the simplest, safest, most predictable procedure(s) that will help you achieve your aesthetic goals. We want your feedback so we can better serve you.
