Lipodissolve Therapy
The information contained herein is intended solely for patient education. Lipodissolve Therapy is currently not approved by the FDA and the information below does not constitute an endorsement by Dr. O'Connell or Plastic Surgery of Southern Connecticut. To get answers to the most frequent questions about Lipodissolve Therapy, please select one of the links below:
What is Lipodissolve Therapy?
Lipodissolve therapy (or "mesotherapy") is a means of reducing unwanted, localized fatty deposits through injections of medications into a localized area. Mesotherapy has other applications including reduction of cellulite. Multiple treatments are usually required.

How does Lipodissolve therapy work?
The mixture of medications causes the fat cells to release their fat deposits. The fat is then absorbed into the bloodstream and ultimately removed through the kidneys and/or liver. Approximately 12 to 15 percent of patients achieve minimal to no improvement with Lipodissolve Therpy.

Is Lipodissolve FDA approved?
The medications used in Lipodissolve are either outside the regulatory scope of the FDA or are FDA approved medications being used "off-label". Currently the FDA and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery are working together to study the safety and effectiveness of Lipodissolve therapy.

How soon will I see results?
Depending upon the area treated improvement may be noted after one or two treatments. Some patients and body areas may require five to seven treatments and a small number of patients achieve no improvement.

Are the treatments painful?
Most patients report that the treatments feel like a pinch or bee sting and anesthesia is usually not required. Following treatment the area is uncomfortable and swollen but pain medication is usually not required.

How does Lipodissolve compare to liposuction?
Lipodissolve therapy is not a replacement for liposuction. Lipodissolve is intended to treat smaller, more limited areas and effectiveness is variable.

Are there risks associated with Lipodissolve therapy?
Because lipodissolve therapy is delivered directly to a target area, side effects are usually limited. As with any aesthetic procedure, a thorough consideration of all risks, alternatives and potential benefits is an important part of the pretreatment consultative process.
