Plastic surgery procedure - collagen injections
To get answers to the most frequent questions about the collagen
injections cosmetic procedure, please select one of the links
below:
What are collagen treatments?
Collagen treatments are examples of dermal fillers used in aesthetic
surgery to reduce wrinkles, lines and scars and to augment soft
tissue contours.
Collagen is large helical protein that occurs naturally in the
body and is an important building block of the skin.
A highly purified form of injectable collagen was first introduced
in 1981 by the Collagen Corporation of Palo Alto, California.
This collagen is derived from bovine (cow) collagen and is marketed
as three products under the trade names Zyderm® and Zyplast®.

Are collagen treatments permanent?
No. Collagen is completely degraded by the body and therefore
repeated injections may be necessary.

What are Autologen® and Dermalogen®?
Autologen is an injectible form of collagen
which is derived from the patient's own skin by the Collagenesis
Corporation of Beverly, Mass.
Dermalogen is an "off the shelf" human collagen
product known as an injectable tissue matrix and is also manufactured
by the Collagenesis Corporation. This product is composed of intact
collagen fibrils, elastic network and proteoglycans designed to
provide a matrix to support ingrowth of the patient's own collagen.
Dr. O'Connell uses both products in his practice of aesthetic
surgery.

Are there risks associated with collagen injections?
As in all aesthetic surgical procedures there are risks and potential
complications, a thorough discussion of which is an essential
part of the consultative process.
