Should I have textured or smooth implants and do they go behind or in front of the muscle and what about implant shape?

Dr. O'Connell believes that the choice between saline and gel implants, between textured and smooth implants and the various shapes should be individualized for each patient. These choices as well as location of the incision and placement with regard to the pectoralis muscle is a joint decision that will be made at the time of your consultation.

What incisions are used to place breast implants?

The incision can be placed in the axilla (armpit), around the areola, near the inframammary fold or in the umbilicus (belly button). Each alternative has its advantages and disadvantages.

How is size determined?

The choice of implant size is in part one of patient preference. Certain measurements are taken during your consultation to assist in this determination.

"Trying on" implants within a brassiere is very helpful in determining size choice. Dr. O'Connell also uses photographs where patients are matched as closely as possible to other patients with similar height, weight and breast size to help choose implant size.

Remember that implant try-ons, computer imaging and visualization of pre- and postoperative photographs are used only as educational tools and that no guarantee is implied.

Where is the surgery performed?

Dr. O'Connell performs breast augmentation either as an outpatient at Bridgeport Hospital or in his office surgical facility depending upon choice of anesthesia technique.

Are there risks associated with breast augmentation and breast implants?

Although breast augmentation is quite safe and most patients are satisfied with their results, as with any surgical procedure, there are risks and potential complications. Problems such as bleeding, infection, thrombophlebitis, etc. can occur following any surgical operation and careful assessment of the risks, alternatives and potential benefits of any surgical procedure is an important part of the pre-operative consultative process.
