Aesthetic surgery practice relocates to Westport

Nationally known plastic surgeon, Dr. Joseph O'Connell, has recently relocated his practice, which is limited to aesthetic surgery, to 208 Post Road W. in Westport. He had previously practiced in Fairfield for 12 years and has recently completed a comprehensive year-long renovation of an existing outpatient surgical center in Westport — and he's hoping to win a town beautification award for 2003.

Lobby at Plastic Surgery of Southern ConnecticutIn addition to such traditional cosmetic surgical procedures such as facial and eyelid rejuvenation, liposuction, breast augmentation and reduction, "tummy tucks" and rhinoplasties, the facility offers ancillary aesthetic procedures such as BOTOX®, laser hair removal, customized medical skin care programs, collagen, photo rejuvenation, and laser resurfacing.

Dr. O'Connell is a fourth generation Connecticut native who has resided in Westport for more than a decade. "It made sense for me to practice in the town where I live and where I have many close friends," said O'Connell. "I think it's important for Westport residents to realize that there's no longer a need to travel outside of Fairfield County to obtain the finest and most up to date cosmetic surgical care available."

Dr. O'Connell is a 1981 graduate of Cornell University Medical College and completed his residency in plastic surgery at New York Hospital / Cornell Medical Center in 1988. He has been certified by both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery and served as chief of plastic surgery at Bridgeport Hospital for seven years.

Dr. O'Connell prefers minimally invasive techniques under local anesthesia. He has been featured in the media both locally and nationally and as been listed as one of the "top-doctors" in the New York areas for the past three years. He recently performed a "short-scar" facelift on Channel 12 and has twice performed surgery on the CBS television show, Inside Edition. Dr. O'Connell has also served as a consultant to Westport's Derma Clinic for many years.

The office was designed by Monty Mitchell Associates of New York, a firm specializing in outpatient surgical facilities and includes such amenities as a private entrance, limousine service and two separate waiting areas so O'Connell's high profile patients need not run into each other. This is Mitchell's third plastic surgical facility and clearly the most elaborate and luxurious. The state-of-the-art surgical facility, which includes a two-bed recovery room, has been accredited by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities. This means that an ambulatory surgical facility has passed strict guidelines for operation: for equipment, staff, hospital access, anesthesia use and surgeon's qualifications.

"I believe this is simply the finest plastic surgical facility in the Northeast — period," notes O'Connell. "No expense has been spared to optimize comfort and safety for our patients and we have features that even the largest hospitals simply cannot afford today."

"We deliberately don't have voice mail or an automated phone answering system — it's just not our style," notes O'Connell. "While we're clearly high-tech, we've never forgotten the importance of old fashioned, personalized care. Many of our patients have been with us for years and have traveled considerable distances to see us. I think they appreciated the fact that a call or inquiry is always answered by the same people they've come to know and trust. We're in it for the long term and I hope that anyone considering an aesthetic procedure will keep us in mind."

Dr. O'Connell also stresses the importance of board certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and membership in the American Society of Plastic Surgeons for those considering aesthetic surgery. "I encourage my patients to do their homework when choosing their plastic surgeon and to call 1-888-4PLASTIC (475-2784), to log onto www.plasticsurgery.org, to visit the Web site at www.plasticsurgeryct.com or to call us at (203) 454-0044."
